Study of eta-Meson Production in the Reaction pd->3He eta

Abstract

We propose to continue our measurements of the total and differential cross sections of the reaction pd->3He eta at excess energies between Q = 3 and 40 MeV at the COSY-11 installation. Such data would cover the energy region between pure S-wave scattering as confirmed by SATURNE at excess energies <= 7 MeV and the data point of COSY-GEM at Q = 49.3 MeV, which showed a non-symmetric angular distribution. A detailed analysis will allow to study both the reaction mechanism which is under discussion and the onset of higher partial waves in this reaction. Preliminary COSY-11 data suggest a transition from a two step mechanism to a dominant resonant production.
